American consumers enjoy Nature Valley bars a lot., and somehow One is frequently included in the goody bags from children’s birthday parties or is offered as a snack at events.
What Is Gluten?
The protein called gluten is present in grains like wheat, rye, barley, and triticale. Thus, gluten is present in all foods that list wheat, rye, barley, and triticale among their ingredients.
In terms of science, gluten is a protein made up of two smaller proteins called glutenin and gliadin. When flour becomes wet, such as when water is added to make dough, glutenin and gliadin combine to form gluten, which is typically found in most breads. Water and kneading the dough both help to activate the gluten.
Gluten is not necessarily unhealthy for you, though, unless you have celiac disease or have been told you have a gluten sensitivity. People with celiac disease will experience severe symptoms from even minute amounts of gluten, whereas people with sensitivity may experience symptoms that are similar but not quite as bad. It’s crucial to speak with your doctor if you think you have a gluten intolerance.
Do Nature Valley Bars Contain Gluten?
The majority of Nature Valley bars contain oats, which are dangerous for people who avoid gluten to eat because they are heavily cross-contaminated with wheat.
The Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bars, on the other hand, are not gluten-free and do not contain oats. If you follow a gluten-free diet, you can safely eat these.
Which Nature Valley Bars Are Not Gluten Free
The Nature Valley Oats ‘N Honey Crunchy Bars may look like they are gluten-free, but they actually contain oats, so they are not.
Despite the fact that oats are technically naturally gluten-free, the growing, harvesting, and manufacturing processes heavily cross-contaminate them with gluten. In fact, one study discovered that 109 out of 134 commercial oat products contained blends of wheat, barley, and rye. Another confusing aspect of the Nature Valley label is its “contains” or “may contains” statements. The top eight allergens—wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, milk, and eggs—must all be disclosed by companies before a product is sold. (Please note “gluten” is not considered a top eight allergen, only wheat. Along with wheat, rye, barley, and occasionally oats also contain gluten.)
Nature Valley’s label says it “contains” soy, and “may contain” peanut, almond and pecan ingredients. Wheat, however, is not mentioned. Truth be told, the label absolutely should say “may contain wheat” as well.
Because the contains statement doesn’t say “may contain wheat,” many gluten-free eaters think it’s safe to consume, but it’s not safe at all.
Additionally, I conducted an independent test of the Nature Valley Bars using my Nima Sensor, a transportable gluten-detection tool. Nima discovered gluten, providing yet more evidence that these crunchy bars are not safe for gluten-free consumption.
Are Gluten-free Nature Valley Protein Bars Available?
While the majority of Nature Valley bars contain gluten, Nature Valley Protein Bars do not. Confusing, I know!
You’ll notice that the Nature Valley Protein Bars are gluten-free and do not contain oats. Be sure to look for the “gluten free” claim so you don’t confuse the protein bars with the other gluten-containing Nature Valley bars.
The gluten-free labeled Nature Valley Protein Bars include the following flavors:

- Peanut, Almond and Dark Chocolate Protein Bars

Are Nature Valley Bars Free Of Gluten?
The majority of Nature Valley bars contain oats, which are dangerous for people who avoid gluten because they are highly cross-contaminated with wheat.
However, the Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bars are not gluten-free and do not contain any oats. On a gluten-free diet, these can be safely consumed.
Health Benefits Of Nature Valley Bars
It is simple to assume that these bars are healthy because they are made with real ingredients, like whole grain oats, and lack artificial sweeteners, food coloring, and high fructose corn syrup. As with many packaged treats, we do want to pay attention to the total sugar content of each serving. While sugar isn’t necessarily bad, eating too much of it can have a negative impact on your health.
Most Nature Valley bars contain 7–11g of additional sugar. Problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance can result from eating too much sugar. The average adult male and female should each consume about 36g of added sugar per day, according to the American Heart Association. It is simple to understand how Nature Valley bars can add up and contribute to about half of the daily sugar allowance for the average woman with 11g of added sugar.
But occasionally indulging in a Nature Valley Bar can be acceptable when combined with a high-nutrient diet and an active way of life.
