Water Filter Quality
How well a water filter pitcher actually removes harmful substances should be the first and most crucial metric considered when making a purchase. All of these brands have received certifications from NSF International or the Water Quality Association, with a focus on the removal of particular harmful substances from municipal tap water.
When it comes to taste, Brita and PUR filters are comparable. These brands’ entry-level filters are primarily made of activated carbon, which readily absorbs organic particles and removes chlorine. Both manufacturers now provide an upgraded filter that removes lead, drugs, and other contaminants even better than the standard filters.
The ZeroWater filter is very different from other systems on the market because it has twice as much contaminant-grabbing media inside the filter cartridge, most of which is an ion-exchange resin that also removes minerals, metals, and salts in addition to organic compounds. The water is completely pure, and the procedure is comparable to one you might see in a laboratory or for making medicines.
Since mineral-free water conducts electricity less than mineral-containing water, it is simple to test the mineral content using a standard conductivity tester, which ZeroWater emphasizes by including with their pitchers.
In a PUR and Brita filter, there are also some ion-exchange beads, but not nearly as many. Each filter successfully removes lead and at least one other heavy metal, but these filters don’t do much for hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium.
In addition to not getting hard water scale in your electric kettle or coffee maker, this means that ZeroWater can have a greater impact on taste.
Which One Suits You Best?
Both Brita and ZeroWater have advantages and disadvantages, but they also meet different needs.
When you want the flexibility of many choices, Brita is a top choice. It has thirteen options in comparison to ZeroWater’s seven, offering a much wider selection of water filter pitchers. But ZeroWater offers effectiveness by including more filters with your purchase up front. The convenient subscription-based program allows you to save money over time and avoid having to go to the store to buy a replacement. It is also fortunate because Brita’s Longlast+ filter will last you about six months, compared to ZeroWater filters’ short lifespan of just a few months.
The Brita water pitcher filter system is excellent for your needs if you’re looking for a lot of options. ZeroWater, on the other hand, produces excellent results for your water filter pitcher system if premium filtration is your primary concern.

Ergonomics Of Each Pitcher
A water filter pitcher’s ergonomics are also crucial. A water pitcher should be simple to hold and pour from. Additionally, the pre-filtered water reservoir should be big enough to fill the pitcher at least halfway.
We compared the remaining ergonomic factors to distinguish between the pitchers since they could all fill at least half of the pitcher from a single reservoir fill.
The PUR filter system has the advantage of an intuitive positive locking mechanism for the filter: You have to twist the refill into place, eliminating any possibility that you’ll mistakenly drink unfiltered water because you didn’t put it in correctly.
Having said that, we haven’t experienced any problems with the Brita’s seals failing; if it’s installed incorrectly, water will flow through it very quickly. Additionally, ZeroWater’s enormous filters securely screw onto the reservoir.
The larger Brita pitcher was the most challenging to hold and pour from. Especially when compared to the handle itself, the weight doesn’t feel particularly balanced. Overall, I get the impression that the Brita pitcher is a straightforward, functional item with little attention paid to design or ergonomics.
While we don’t anticipate the ZeroWater pitcher to be winning any prizes for artistic inspiration, we did discover that it was more ergonomic in general. We used the ZeroWater – 10-Cup Pitcher as our first ZeroWater pitcher. For those who don’t want to lift a heavy pitcher all the time, this design has a spout on the bottom. However, the flow rate is so slow that one test family claimed they completely ignored it after a week.
We prefer the ZeroWater – 6-Cup Pitcher if you’re looking for a pitcher that’s more practical because it fits more easily in a refrigerator and isn’t as heavy when full. However, you’ll need to refill it after each use.
Water Filter Speed
We also put each filter to the test to see how long it would typically take to filter a cup of water. If you ever plan to fill bottles before a trip or serve water at a party, it’s important to take into account how long it will take to get more filtered water. However, you might not be concerned about this result.
For this test, the typical Brita filter comes out on top, taking just 40 seconds on average to filter one cup of water. The ZeroWater filter, which filtered one cup of exceptionally clean water in an average of 110 seconds, used to be the slowest water filter in our tests.
Water Filter Taste Tests
A blind taste test was one of the first tests we performed, but as time has gone on, we’ve been surprised by how extreme some people’s opinions can be. In three different blind tests with groups of office workers, friends and family members, we asked testers to rank unmarked samples for qualities like “dirty,” “refreshing,” “artificial” and “crisp.”
The results were still difficult to interpret after running two different groups. However, when we conducted a third test using controls for the beverages that our judges typically drank, preferences fell into two categories: those who typically drink tap or spring water preferred Brita and PUR, while those accustomed to reverse osmosis preferred ZeroWater for its mineral-free taste.
The top ranking within the carbon filter group has changed over time, but the key decision is still whether to keep the minerals in or remove them.
Evian and Arrowhead, when compared to bottled water brands, match the modest mineral content of our tap water at 300–400 parts per million (ppm). (Two to three times more expensive are Perrier and Gerolsteiner.) There are also bottled products like Dasani and Aquafina that undergo reverse osmosis treatment to obtain almost no dissolved solids. The majority of bottled water falls between 50 and 150 ppm, in the middle of the spectrum.

There are many highly regarded choices for water filter pitcher systems offered by both Brita and ZeroWater. ZeroWater provides a premium filtration system that is superior to Brita’s capabilities even though Brita is slightly more affordable, has more options, and better product protection.
What Is The Purpose Of A Water Filter Pitcher?
Systems for filtering water in pitchers use a replaceable water filter as part of an internal filtration system. It cleans your water by removing dangerous impurities like lead and chlorine from regular drinking water, resulting in better-tasting and healthier water.
How Much Does A Pitcher With A Water Filter Cost?
Depending on the model and features you select, a water filter pitcher system can cost anywhere from $50 to $150. Products from Brita and ZeroWater both start at around $20, but the prices for Brita products top out at $40, while those from ZeroWater reach a maximum of $50.
